All through out my pregnancy I was constantly Googling and searching for the best baby products out there on the market. Becoming a first time mommy is scary enough, so the added stress of having everything you need is not necessary. One thing I learned through out the baby registry- up until now process is to never trust what you read online. I know this may sound obvious but every baby is different, and just because one teething remedy that cost $20 helped one mom, doesn't mean it will help me. And same goes for something cheap, yes you get what you pay for but sometimes, it works just fine. So I made a list of what helped me during pregnancy, postpartum and Breella. I'm money savvy, so even if you were to try these items and they did not work, it would not be a big hit to your wallet! And I believe some stores will take back certain items.

Pregnancy:

1. I had hyperemesis which is the worst form of "morning" sickness. And when I say morning sickness, I mean, morning, afternoon, evening, late night sickness. I was miserable! Finally my doctor saw how sick I was when I lost 7 pounds in less than a week and she prescribed me Zofran- a.k.a life saver in a bottle. They're little pills that dissolve under your tongue and help stop nausea immediately-- for me. Some people need IV's with Zofran because the pills did not help, and for some people it did not help at all. But if you're like me and NOTHING else helped, try talking to your doctor!

2. A body pillow. Once I reached about 13 weeks of pregnancy, it started getting hard for me to get comfortable in bed. Not because of my belly but because for some reason my legs needed a pillow between them as well as I needed to hug a pillow. After a ton of research, I decided on spending around $55 for a Snoogle. The Snoogle is a giant pregnancy pillow that is supposed to help your sleep position. They even make ones that help make sure you do not roll onto your back. Well after two nights of using the pillow, I hated it and ended up selling it on eBay. I found that a $5 body pillow purchase at Walmart helped me much more. But I know a handful of woman who swear by this pillow. I think I felt more guilty at the fact that I spend $55 on a pillow, which ended up making me hate it.

3. A pregnancy book/keepsake. You first pregnancy is such an amazing journey that you only get to experience once, so make the best of it. I purchased this cute calendar keepsake and kept track of anything exciting that happened, such as when I first felt her kick, doctor's appointments, etc. You don't have to be a first time mom to get this obviously. I know for a fact I will do this for every pregnancy. Every book/calendar is different but mine cost about $12 on Ebay and came with cute stickers that coordinated with the events.

4. Palmer's Tummy Butter for Stretch Marks. Okay, okay, I'll admit that after spend around $8 for a jar of this, I only used it maybe 3 or 4 times. It's really greasy but smells great and really moisturized my skin. I hated to use it because I was afraid of ruining my clothes, so make sure you wear a shirt that you don't care about in case it leaves a grease stain. I got NO stretch marks so I guess the 3 or 4 times helped?

Side note: almost everyone will say that stretch marks are hereditary- so don't spend too much on trying to prevent them. If you're going to get them, you're going to get them.
4. 3D ultrasounds. This is something fun for you and your significant other or a family member to enjoy! I got two done, one at 15 weeks ( I lied and said I was 17 weeks so the place would tell me the gender- shhh) and one at 26 weeks. My doctor's office did not offer these so I went to an independent place and paid $85 for the first session- we got about 20 prints, the gender, a DVD of the scan, a disk with all of the pictures taken and a coupon to go back for the next visit. We went to a different place for the second one and paid $30 for 6 prints and a 30 minute scan. It's always better to get one further along so you can see the details of the baby.

15 weeks- IT'S A GIRL

5. A belly casting kit. I mentioned in my last blog post how relieved I was to be able to cast my belly before Breella came. This is something that is so fun to do and is also a great keepsake! You can get the kit at Babies R Us, and it comes with about 6 rolls of the paper casting stuff, petroleum jelly and instructions. You should wait until you're pretty far along, but not too far so that you don't miss the chance to do it. The kit cost around $20 and came with more than enough to cover my belly. It's cool to look back at the cast and see just how big you were. I casted my belly 6 days before Breella came so it is almost the exact size that I was when I delivered.

6. TUMS. I lived off of Tums and Rolaids from the second trimester until I gave birth. I had the worst heartburn imaginable. I thought I was going to burn a hole through my esophagus. I hated the fruity flavors. Wintergreen Tums were my favorite, they tasted the least like chalk. Rolaids helped but in my opinion were too chalky.

Postpartum:

1. Lansinoh Affinity Pro Double Electric Breast Pump. Everyone will tell you that the Medela is the best breast pump out there and to be honest, they're probably right. I used the Medela Symphony in the hospital and LOVED it. But I won't drop $300 on a breast pump, so I decided on the Lansinoh Affinity Double Electric Breast Pump and I loved it. It had two types of suctions and several "sucking" strengths. I got it for $149 at Babies R Us, along with a few bottles that Breella still loves besides the Dr. Browns.

2. Go Lacta. This also has to do with breast feeding. I always felt like I wasn't producing enough milk so I purchased all natural, vegan pills called Go Lacta. I would talk 2-3 pills, 2-3 times a day and by the 3rd day I was pumping about an ounce to two ounces more than normal. I swore by these pills. They leave a green tea after-taste though, but that was my only side-effect. http://www.golacta.com/ is their website for more information.

3. Carvel (or whatever ice cream shop you have). When I was in the hospital and for about a month after, all I wanted was a chocolate Carvelanche from Carvel with extra hot fudge and extra crunchies. I must have had one every single night. I'm not sure how this might be helpful to everyone, but ice cream heals the soul.

4. A make-over. Listen up husbands, fiances, boyfriends, fathers- after we give birth, most of us do NOT feel sexy, or remotely close to it. We don't have time to shower, we have a mom pouch, we're sore, tired, engorged, you name it. After Breella, I went to the salon and had my hair done. I felt so much better after it, and who know guys! She might just thank you!

I guess you can say that I was pretty easy after Breella came. The main things that I relied on at first were my pump and Go Lacta.

For Baby:

I had a lot of life saving products when Breella was born, from her swing to her bouncer to her car ride simulator. I suggest that everyone buys at least one of those because you and your baby will love it!

1. Gas drops. When Breella hit about a month and a half she became extremely colicky and cried nonstop. We found that gas drops really helped and they still help to this day. At first we used Little Remedies but we use store brand now, from Target to Babies R us, they're all the same and the store brands are cheaper!

2. Mommy's Bliss Gripe Water. This came hand in hand with the gas drops. I found that this brand helped the most with Breella and since it had no alcohol in it the doctor said I could give Breella this and gas drops all day as much as I needed. I would pour a little in her bottle with the formula and give it to her. It may be a coincidence but once I started using this, her colic went away. I found this at Walmart for $10.

3. Dr Browns bottles. After and even while I was breast feeding, I used Dr Browns bottles, and we still use them to this day. They have a "straw" like tube in that goes in the bottle. This is to ensure that there is always milk/formula in the nipple. This results in less gas and a happier baby. Yes they are a pain to clean but everything is dishwasher safe. Plus the dishwasher gets so hot, that it also sanitizes the bottles! If you do not have a dishwasher, I suggest getting the Dr Browns bottle brush, it makes cleaning them a whole lot easier. They also come with a wide neck for breast feeding babies, PLUS different colors, like pink and purple.

4. Bedtime body wash, bubble bath and lotion. I use Johnson and Johnson but any brand will do! I have the all in one, shampoo, wash and bubble bath that we use during bath time and then once we dry Bree off well lather her up with the bedtime lotion. It comes in a purple bottle and smells amazing! I use it on myself sometimes. I am not sure if this work, but I feel like Breella gets a better night's sleep when we use it. Plus it leaves her smelling nice, clean and soft.

5. A Boppy pillow. This comes in handy when nursing but it also has many other uses as you baby grows! Of course it is a place for the baby to lay while breast feeding, but the baby can also lay on the pillow, use the pillow for tummy time and when older, use the pillow to sit in to help gain balance when learning how to sit up. Even if you are not breast feeding, you should invest in a pillow like this. Breella loves to sit in it or lay her head on it and drink her bottle while watching tv. Plus it comes with different covers to put on it so if later on you have a different gender baby- all you have to get is a different case!

6. Rich. He is the reason I stay so sane while being a mommy. Having a positive support system will ALWAYS be the biggest and best thing you need when becoming and being a mommy. And I couldn't thank him enough. Thank you Rich, I love you.

As I mentioned above, most of the essential baby items I used for Breella are things such as her seats. As I continue down the journey of motherhood, I will be sure to update this post with more things that I love for Breella. I hoped my first time mommies and mommies to be find this a little helpful! I have provided links below to where you can purchase everything! If you have any favorite baby products, feel free to mention them in the comments.

My pregnancy was the perfect pregnancy. Smooth and no complications whatsoever. At every doctor's appointment, she would always say "everything looks perfect".

On February 6th, my dad's birthday, I was feeling great all morning like any other day. As the day progressed, I started to feel more and more pressure with some slight back pains. I had felt this once before and upon telling my doctor this at our most recent visit, she told me to call them the next time I felt like that. So, I did just that and was advised to come down to the office to be checked.  When I got there I was hooked up to the machine where they found out that I was having contractions every 3-5 minutes apart! They checked me and I was 2 cm dilated. They sent me to labor and delivery to be hooked up and monitored some more. I was 33 weeks and 3 days.

This was the morning of the 6th
And this was the afternoon

They did not think I was in labor, at least that's what they kept telling me. However, I was staying overnight to be monitored. As the night progressed, my contractions got stronger and stronger and were getting closer together. At this point the pain was borderline excruciating and they gave me some Demerol so I could get some sleep. Demerol never took the pain away, it only made me very EXTREMELY loopy and out of it. I was so drugged up that I stopped dealing with pain and just held my breath in my sleep. I was awoken to nurses flipping me over, putting an oxygen mask to my face and them yelling "BREATHE BRITTANY YOU HAVE TO BREATHE". I eventually stopped holding my breath and did not need the oxygen mask anymore. During this ordeal, Breella's heart rate had dropped for the first time.

Early the morning, I was given an ultrasound to make sure I wasn't losing fluids and to check Breella's measurements in case I were to deliver sometime soon. She was measuring 5 pounds 12 ounces. During the ultrasound, my contractions had gotten so strong and so intolerable that I was punching the wall every time I got one. The doctor put me on a 24 hour magnesium drip, NOT to stop labor but to help her brain develop more should I give birth. The doctor's did not want to stop my labor but they knew the magnesium might stop it. It never did, it just spaced out my contractions to around 10 minutes apart. At this point I was feeling better and starving, on February 8th, they stopped the magnesium, FINALLY let me eat and discharged us. They told us that Breella is ready to come and it will be any day. They weren't too ready though, they knew she would be strong.

I was so hungry that this was absolutely amazing
Knowing that we didn't have much more time as just the two of us, that Saturday we celebrated Valentine's day. Rich's exact words were " lets go out to dinner tonight, we don't know what we'll be doing on Friday". So, we did just that. We went to Red Lobster for an early Valentine's day dinner, followed by casting my belly! I was so happy that I was able to cast it before she came.

On February 11th I went back to labor and delivery because I was bleeding bright red blood. By the time I got there the bleeding stopped. I felt like the doctors didn't believe me because they kept telling me it's old blood and that I was fine. I just knew it wasn't old blood but I gave up on arguing with them. The doctor told me to go home, take a warm bath and drink red wine to help with my contractions.

This was my last belly picture with Breella
On Friday, February 14th, I was getting ready for my usual day of grocery shopping then relaxing with Rich, I had a doctors appointment and was told to come in early since my doctor would be performing a c-section later that afternoon and she didn't want to not see me. When I got to the doctors, I told her how my back was killing me, she hooked me up to the monitor and sure enough, I was contracting ever 2-3 minutes! I didn't even know it! What concerned her though was that Breella's heartrate dropped very low, two times in about 30 minutes. I was being sent to labor and delviery AGAIN. She checked me and I was still at a 2.5cm but advised me to call my fiance and let him know.

The nurse drew a heart for Valentine's Day
When I stood up, I felt a gush down my leg. Thinking my water broke, I excitedly looked down only to see blood. Blood, everywhere. I screamed for the doctor, she came in and said "whoa". I yelled "THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED TUESDAY", but not as much. They got a wheel chair and rushed me through the tunnel to labor and delivery, where I was greeted on a first name basis. Rich and my parents arrived where we were given the news that no matter what, I was going to have to stay in the hospital until I delivered, and that could have been a few more weeks! They said that if Breella's heart rate drops again, that they would perform a c-section. My doctor would rather her out of me and being helped than in me and suffering. They told my parents and Rich that I would be needing a c-section anytime soon since my contractions slowed down to every 5-6 minutes, so my parents went home and dropped of my car while Rich went home and changed, fed Lola and such.
This was the contraction that cause her heart rate to drop, as you can see on the chart above. (contractions on the bottom, her heart rate on top)

About 15 minutes after everyone left, my contractions picked up again. I knew this was it, I was having her today and soon. I texted Rich to leave and come because "I think it's going to happen again". And it did. Her heart rate dropped and I called for the nurse. She said "hm" and nonchalantly walked away. I then heard them page my doctor, I heard some talking and then heard my doctor say "definitely". Soon after, 2 nurses in scrubs walked in and told me that I was going to being delivering today via c-section. I was terrified, Rich did not make it back in time for my epidural so I had to hold the nurses hand. I was shaking uncontrollably at this point. As soon as Rich walked in, I broke down crying. We were about to be parents, to a 5 week old preemie.

At 5:06 pm on February 14, 2014, Breella Sophia-Kathleen Busacca was born, weighing 5 pounds 15 ounces, measuring in at 18.5 inches long.

Despite being 5 week early, Breella was very healthy! She had to stay in the NICU because hospital rules, if the baby is born before 36 weeks, they have too. After running a bunch of test, the doctors could not figure out why I went into labor early, or why I bled so bad. Breella got to come home with us on February 18th, and our lives have been forever amazing since.

How did Rich propose to you?

I have received this question numerous times and I figured, what better way to tell everyone then a blog post? The beginning of the story is based off of Rich's recollection-- the morning of the big day...

On July 28th, we were getting ready to start our vacation to Myrtle Beach. I had the ring in my wallet. It was the only place that I knew Brittany would not look. She started to use my carry-on to pack some of her things. It was too risky hiding it in there. I started getting nervous once we got to the airport because I didn't want it to interfere with security and then it would be obvious and Brittany would find out. Just to make sure that the metal detectors wouldn't go off, I told the TSA agent "Just an FYI, I have an engagement ring in my wallet". To which to replied, "aw for her?" (well I should sure hope that it's for me!). Our carry-on bags and things went through the machine before I got there and Brittany got ahead of me and started grabbing everything. I don't know how she missed it. We got to the hotel, and found out we were on the 19th floor, which was the top floor. Our room had two balconies, one that looked out to North Ocean Boulevard, and one that looked out to the ocean. This was perfect, I now had two possible places to propose.

After we got back from the beach, we started getting ready to go out to dinner at Joe's Crab Shack. I was getting the balcony that faced the beach for the big question. I had our first song back from 2007 playing, With You by Chris Brown... how unfortunate that he sings that.
I had finished getting ready and by this time, I was starving and I just wanted to get to the restaurant in hopes of beating the big dinner rush, but Rich just insisted on looking at "that thing" on the beach. I really didn't want to and tried to convince Rich to "lets just go". But I caved in. As I walked out onto the balcony, I heard our song playing, and then it click. OMG, I THINK HE'S GOING TO PROPOSE. We sat down and Rich gave a speech, I instantly started to cry. He then told me that he left the ring home because he didn't want to lose it on the flight. At that point I didn't care, I WAS ENGAGED! For some reason I looked away and at that point Rich got down on one knee and asked me to marry him where he then presented my ring.

I said yes and we kissed. It was one of the most amazing moments of my life. After that we went to Joe's Crab Shack where I proceeded to tell and show everyone that I was freshly engaged. I figured that Rich would propose while on vacation since I was 7 weeks, going on 8 weeks pregnant. But I definitely didn't think that it would be the first night. It was the best vacation ever! Enjoy some pictures!
